Spectators welcome
Limited numbers of spectators are allowed during each event. A group of tribal chiefs form the tourism council that allows only 50 visitors per event.
Steel yourself
Divers can and do get hurt. Typical injuries include dislocated joints and broken bones. The last recorded death was in 1974.
Try bungee jumping for a similar experience
AJ Hackett witnessed land diving in the 1970s. Upon his return to Queenstown, New Zealand, he emulated the dive off a bridge, but with the benefit of elastic cords and deep water below. Thus, bungee jumping was born.
Getting There
Vanuatu is a remote nation comprised of 83 separate islands in the South Pacific. The most populous and developed islands of Efate, Espiritu Santo, and Tanna are easy enough to get around, but Pentecost Island takes a bit more planning to reach and traverse. Travelers will need to depart from either Sydney or Auckland, then look to either Air Vanuatu or Vanuatu Helicopters.
Lodging
Accommodations range from budget-friendly motels to lavish resorts on the water.
