Meet the locals
If you are a foreigner this will more than likely happen whether you want it to or not. Locals here aren't exposed to tourists too often, even during the festival. Make the most of your newfound fame and greet everyone with at least a smile.
Don't get too close
Safety doesn't seem to be high on the priority list during this festival. There is no real safety barrier to stop anyone getting a little too close to the action so it is up to your judgment to keep a safe distance from the molten metal.
Learn some basic Chinese
Even a few basic words and phrases will go a long way when trying to communicate. This is a pretty remote town so don't expect the locals to know any English.
Prepare for the cold
Temperatures can drop well below freezing, especially during the night when the festival kicks into gear. Minus fifteen degrees C (5 F) is not uncommon.
