Enough talk about the musical lineup – we want to discuss the art at Coachella . Often overlooked, the artists and companies that bring large-scale art installations and interactive environments truly make the Coachella experience, simultaneously serving as landmarks for lost friends, places for relaxation, photo ops for making lasting memories and feasts for the senses. From Robert Bose’s Balloon Chain to Poetic Kinetics’ ever-changing, iconic Coachella installations, the art enlivens the Southern California desert landscape with immersive curiosity, interactivity and vibrance. Here are a few artists and companies we are excited to see at this year’s festival:

Poetic Kinetics, the mastermind behind the Electric Daisy at Insomniac Events’ Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and Coachella’s past iconic roving installations such as the Coachella Snail and Escape Velocity aka Coachella Astronaut, returns to Polo Fields for another year of creativity in motion. Last year’s Escape Velocity roamed across the venue, projecting headshots of famous artists and social media participants (who were able to submit their photos with a branded hashtag for the event) onto the helmet. Their work always changes, and whatever Poetic Kinetics has in store for the festival goers will surely delight them and leave them in awe. Some Reddit users are already trying to guess this year’s iconic installation, with speculation ranging from a mermaid, to a pirate ship, a whale or a massive gorilla. What are yours?

Aphidoidea , an art collective based in Los Angeles, CA, returns this year after a successful display of Through the Cattails for 2 years prior. Wired with light modules that display multiple colors, Through the Cattails swayed along with the harmonious music wafting from the festival stages. Expect Aphidoidea's new installation to complement nature and music beautifully, and illuminate the fields at night to create an ethereal fantasyland.

Ball-Nogues Studio , founded by Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues, is an integrated design and fabrication practice creating art installations inspired by cutting-edge industrial design and architecture. With a focus on interactivity and multipurpose use, Ball-Nogues’ designs offer festival goers a unique and rewarding artistic experience.

Their Copper Droopscape for Coachella 2008 provided festival goers a shaded lounge, simulating an oceanic experience as the canopy translated wind energy into sensuous motions. Similarly, 2009’s Elastic Plastic Sponge (seen in the video above) provided a shaded lounge but offered complete control and flexibility of space; festival goers were able to manipulate the structure to accommodate its changing crowd of cuddle-puddlers and tired dancers. Keep an eye out for this year’s installation because you’ll want to squeeze in some chill time here!

Back for another round of festival fun is Don Kennell, who will showcase a large-scale metal sculpture that features a five-foot-long porch swing. Like 2013’s Yard Dog and last year’s Road Trip, this year’s sculpture will be a functional piece of art modeled after an animal (most likely a bird). If birds aren’t your cup of tea, Christian Ristow’s robotic art will get your gears rolling. An intersection of technology and nature, Ristow’s art features kinetic and robotic elements that inspires participant to engage or think. Ristow has shown several times at Coachella, including 2014’s Becoming Human, 2012’s GarraPlata, and 2010’s Fledgling.

Wrapping up our short list are two companies that elevate the Coachella experience with their whimsical performances in interactive environments. Lucent Dossier Experience is a showcase where imagination meets creativity, where extraordinary talent meets outrageous costumes. A family of jesters, elves, fire dancers, jugglers, contortionists, stilt walkers, burlesque dancers and more create wonderlands for their guests, leading them into a fantastical realm of brilliance and insanity. You don’t want to miss this performance at all.

Hosting Lucent Dossier Experience and a specially-curated lineup of experimental artists is The Do Lab. With its own stage either tucked in the corner of the festival and smack-dab in the middle, The Do Lab encourages participation. Every year, the stage and its surrounding area is re-imagined with creative lighting structures, bountiful shaded areas and misters that cool down your entire body. If you’re lucky, you might even be hosed down by the dancers too. The Do Lab is one of our favorite stages/art installation/interactive environments at Coachella. Find out why here.

Other artists showcasing at the festival Derek Doublin and Vanesse Bonet, Keith Greco, the Haas Brothers, The Jive Joint featuring Super Tall Paul, Raices Cultura, Shrine and Joel Dean Stockdill, and Ben Zamora and John Zamora. We can't wait to see them all!
